KIRA #5. Kona Brewing Co-Maui Jim Waterman Challenge

What? Multi discipline Waterman’s event with 5 different disciplines in 5 individual races, and a relay:

  1. Individual races are comprised of 5 different, stand-alone events in a sprint race format. Participants can race only one event or race as many as they want, where they earn points for each event. In the end, add your points to determine the overall results. Each individual discipline will be recognized, as well as the overall combined points winner. The 5 disciplines are:
  • Swimming
  • Surfski
  • SUP-12’6”
  • OC-1
  • Prone Paddleboard 12’

Race lengths for individual disciplines:

  • Approximate race lengths for Adults and U19:
    • Swim (~300 meters).
    • Surfski (~2 miles).
    • SUP (~1 mile).
    • OC-1 (~2 miles).
    • Prone Paddleboard (~1 mile).
  • Approximate race lengths for Juniors (U16 and U13):
    • Swim (~100 meters).
    • Surfski (~500 meters).
    • SUP (~250 meters).
    • OC-1 (~500 meters).
    • Prone Paddleboard (~250).
  1. Kona Brewing Co-Ed Relay (5 disciplines in 5 different legs of the race). Each team must have at least 3 people on a team with 5 maximum. Adult teams must have at least 1 female on the team. This race is not for points, only for fun and prizes:
  • Approximate length of each discipline:
  • Swim (~200 meters)
  • Surfski (~1 mile)
  • SUP (~half mile)
  • OC-1 (~1 mile).
  • Prone Paddleboard (~half mile).

Where: Kailua Beach and Flat Island. Wave riding is encouraged.

When: Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016. 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Divisions:

  • Male: Open, 30 – 39, 40 – 49, 50 – 59, 60 +
  • Women: Open, 40 – 54, 55+
  • Junior (U13, U16 & U19) any gender. U13 and U16 Free Entry
  • Kona Brewing Co-ed relay: Open and Junior

Equipment: Bring your own crafts if possible, and/or plan to share. SOME extra equipment will be available thanks to:

  • EPIC KAYAKS providing a number of surfskis.
  • Naish, C4 Waterman, Blue Planet Surf, Riviera Paddlesurf and more for providing SUPs
  • C4 Waterman and some generous individuals for providing Prone boards.
  • Foti Bros. and Outrigger Zone for providing OC-1s

If we are short on equipment relative to entrants, we will run heats.

Registration: Kailua Beach Park 7:00 – 8:30.

Cost:

  • Race only one event for $30.00.
  • Adults Race as many events as you like for $40.00 if you.
    • Mail in your registration at least 4 days prior to the event.
    • Pre-register online before midnight February 18.
  • JUNIORS (18 and under) are $15.00 with pre-registration, unlimited racing. (U16 is free)
    • Mail in your registration at least 4 days prior to the event.
    • Pre-register online before midnight February 18.
  • LATE REGISTRATION WILL COST AN ADDITIONAL $10.00

OVERFLOW PARKING will be available to race participants at Lanikai Park inside Lanikai. Drop all your personal items and equipment (except for one craft) at Kailua Beach Park, then drive into Lanikai, and park your vehicle at the association park and paddle to Kailua beach. It is encouraged to use this parking as Kailua Beach Park can get crowded.

Format: Each individual discipline earns the participant points. Combine the points and athlete with the most points wins. See points scale in appendix A below. Courses are start and finish at Kailua Beach Park.

Prizes: Top 3 male and female overall points for the combined individual disciplines = free entry to the Maui Jim Oceanfest – www.mauijimoceanfest.com on June 04 and 05, 2016 in Kaanapali, Maui. Plus medals and raffle prizes.

1st place male and female also receive complimentary accommodations for two nights at the Kaanapali Beach Resort for June 4th and 5th .as part of the 2016 Maui Jim Oceanfest.

Race Times. There will be up numerous races in each discipline for different divisions: If participation is low in a particular race we will combine races per discipline. And if there are too many, we may run heats.

  • Swim: 9:00 a.m.
  • Surfski: 10:00 a.m.
  • SUP: 11:00 a.m.
  • OC-1: 12:00 p.m.
  • Prone: 1:00 p.m.
  • Co-ed Iron relay 2:00 p.m.
