Aloha Paddlers,

KANAKA IKAIKA RACING ASSOCIATION will not be holding a physical, one day event for the Outrigger Zone State Championship, which was slated for this coming Saturday, April 04.  However, KIRA will be holding the Outrigger Zone State Championship as a virtual race.

COVID-19 is prevalent in all our communities and we must do our part to keep it from spreading.  However, at the same time it is important to stay active and healthy, and try our best to maintain a lifestyle that keeps us motivated during this hard time.  Therefore, staying within the guidelines of social distancing and the allowance of exercise, the OUTRIGGER ZONE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP will happen as follows:

  1. Everyone who wishes to participate will do so on their own time until Sunday April 5, midnight (Hawaii STD).  You do NOT have to be a Hawaii Resident to participate in the Outrigger Zone State Championship.
  2. Paddlers will choose a course that works with the guidelines of staying local and keeping away from large groups.
  3. Paddlers can choose the “short” course or the “long” course just like a normal KIRA race, and can choose their craft just as a normal KIRA event.
  4. Each course must start and finish at the same point so there is no downwind advantage.
  5. The short course must be 5 miles and the long course 10 miles.
  6. Paddlers must track their course and mileage with a GPS device.
  7. Take 2 pictures: one of your GPS device with the mileage and time and another of themselves at their race venue.
  8. Post your 2 pictures to your social media feed on Facebook and Instagram. (Sorry, not accepting any FB or IG Stories).
    • Tag @kanakaikaika
    • Tag #Ozonestate2020
    • Set your media account to Public
  9. Each paddler needs to submit this information via Instagram to #Ozonestate2020 by midnight (Hawaii STD) Sunday, April 5.

IF you do not have an Instagram or Facebook account, you can still participate.

  1. Lastly, register to submit your time, race venue, and other information at https://forms.gle/jUSo8M5DoB71Go5T9 by midnight (Hawaii STD) Sunday, April 5.
  2. KIRA will compile all the data and sort the information and provide results.  We will have a virtual awards presentation and will mail awards to the winners.
  3. Each participant will be entered into the raffle to win prizes from KIRA’s sponsors such as Scott Hawaii Slippers, Hinano Tahiti Surfwear, All Good Sunscreen and skin care products, Kona Brewing Co., Hammer Nutrition, Oiwi Paddle Gear, Sharkskin Technical Water Gear, Patagonia and Maui Jim.  We will mail your raffle prize if your name was drawn.
  4. Price:  FREE!!!!  This is a hard time for everyone so as a non-profit organization, KIRA wants to give back the gift of Health and Wellness to everyone’s community.  Healthy people make a positive impact on their community.

Remember, this is to keep us motivated and healthy.  Other than the opportunities we have to get outside and paddle, continue to be vigilant about staying at home, social distancing and keeping interaction with others to a minimum.  Sterilize, wash and keep your hands away from your face and other people.
