CRAFTS: OC-1, OC-2, Surfski-1, Surfski-2, Prone Paddleboard, SUP, V-1

COURSES: Relay: Water Changes from Escort boat. Rabbit Island to Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor – 36.5 miles. Solo: Portlock Point to Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor – 28 miles. The Finish: At the Phoenician Boat Yard just before and outside Kalaeloa Harbor .

RELAY COURSE ONLY: Rabbit Isle to Kalaeloa Harbor.

Open ocean water changes. Start inside Rabbit Island. Paddle between Rabbit and Kaohikaipu Isles, round Makapuu point to a boat 1 mile offshore past Makapuu. Turn on the boat and head down the coast but stay OUTSIDE OF DIAMOND HEAD BUOY and head to Barbers point. Approaching Barbers point you must stay out of the Barbers Point Offshore Moorings security zone: (33CFR165.1407(a)(5). This should not be a problem if you are on the fastest line to the finish (coming back close to the island by then). Read more and see the map on the bottom of this information sheet. the After you round Barbers Point stay close to shore. The finish is about 2 miles past Barbers Point. A half mile before the Ihilani and Aulani Resort you will see the yellow Maui Jim Finish line buoy just off the beach before the harbor mouth.

SOLO ONLY: Portlock Point to Kalaeloa Harbor. Paddlers without an escort must wear a bright colored shirt (orange, red, yellow, pink, fluorescent green, etc…) and have a VHF handheld radio, and/or a cell phone with a tracking app (Life360, Garmin, etc…), with your emergency contact on land tracking you.

Start just in the lee of Portlock point. Stay OUTSIDE OF DIAMOND HEAD BUOY and head to Barbers point. Approaching Barbers point you must stay out of the Barbers Point Offshore Moorings security zone: (33CFR165.1407(a)(5). This should not be a problem if you are on the fastest line to the finish (coming back close to the island by then). THE FINISH: The finish area is hosted and made possible by The Phoenician Boat Yard at 91-573 Malakole St., Kapolei.

Secured parking for trailers and vehicles will be permitted overnight on May 22nd if escorts and/or paddlers would like to use this option. The facility will be open specially from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on May 22nd to drop off. Arrangements can also be made to use the facility during the virtual window between May 23rd and June 23rd. THE FINISH LINE: The red smokestack on the big black boat in drydock, 200 yards before the harbor mouth.

Escort boats are permitted to use the boat ramp at the Phoenician Boat Yard just inside the harbor mouth on the south side. Do not go beyond the jetty past the boat ramp that leads into the working harbor. Canoes must exit the water through the beach outside of the harbor. There is a small path through the reef that will be marked with the finish buoy and flags on the beach. There will not be any formal post race activities so bring your own food and provisions for recovery. As customary this season, everyone take care of themselves and practice prudent COVID safety protocols.

Alternative plan to get crafts out of the water (If the surf is a challenge): You may hoist your craft on your escort boat and motor into the boat ramp where you can then offload your craft on shore.

RELAY: Relay is one division only but can have 2 or 3 paddlers for single crafts and 3–6 person teams doubles. There is not a different division for varying number of team members.

RACE SHIRT: There will be an option to purchase a race shirt for $20.00. If you would like to have the shirt shipped to you in the USA, the cost will be an added $10.00.

TIMELINE:

  • May 19. 12:00 midnight, Registration closes.
    • Escort boat waiver due.
  • May 23 There will not be a pre-race meeting.  The email address you give when you register will be used to send updated information.
  • 9:00 a.m. Virtual relay race window opens, for 30 days. 9:30 a.m. Virtual solo race window opens, for 30 days.
  • You will have to paddle out to the respective starting areas.
  • June 22 Virtual race window closes: 4:00 p.m. hst

Notes:

  • Mixed divisions can have only 1 male paddler per single seat craft relay teams and no more than 2 male paddlers per double seat craft relay teams (for a 3 person team only 1 male). 2 males + 1 female will be counted as an “Open” crew and race vs. the men.
  • SUP relay divisions will include a 14’ class if there is substantial participation.
  • Relay Surfski teams are encouraged to find a suitable sized partner, or a ski with easily adjusting foot pedals so that no craft changes are needed. If substitute crafts are used, it is subject to paddlers finding an escort willing to allow paddlers to change crafts. And, if substitute crafts are used, relief paddler must be facing towards the start (backwards) when his or her partner paddles up for the switch.  OC-1 relay teams must use one canoe.
  • Top 3 will be recognized as open with age group beginning at 4th
  • SUP and Prone solo: If there is a resounding amount of entries, we’ll open up another board class and/or age group divisions, with top 3 overall being recognized as open, and age groups per board division beginning at 4th
  • All relay teams are entered in the age group of the youngest team member. Hence, youngest paddler determines your category.
  • Relay teams in all disciplines will default top 3 to open with age group placing starting with 4th

ENTRY FEE AND DEADLINE: $45.00 per paddler. Registration closes at Midnight Wednesday May 19. Register at www.flpregister.com.

RACE NUMBERS: You must have a teal blue KIRA 2020 number on your paddle craft. If you do not, please contact us at jkfoti@gmail.com, or 808 927-0711 to arrange a new number.

Escort Boat Information.

  • Escort boats are not mandatory for solo paddlers. However, if you are racing solo without an escort, you must have a VHF handheld radio, and/or a cell phone with a tracking app (Life360, Garmin, etc…), with your emergency contact on land who is tracking you.  In case of emergency contact safety boat officials at 808 306-6012, 808 306-4121 or 808 223-7388 during the race.
  • There is a boat ramp inside the Harbor at the Phoenician Boat Yard available for escorts to drop off paddlers and/or pull their boats out of the water. Motorized boats only are permitted inside the harbor mouth, and they are not permitted beyond the jetty inside the mouth of the harbor (see map below).  Monitor channel 12 before entering the harbor.  Paddle crafts cannot enter the harbor under paddle power.
  • All escort boat captains must submit their escort boat waiver in order for their entry to be confirmed – ESCORT WAIVERS CAN BE DOWNLOADED HERE.
  • All escort boat owners must submit the Phoenician’s waiver to be allowed access into the harbor to use the boat ramp or drop off paddlers. THE PHOENICIAN WAIVER CAN BE DOWNLOADED HERE.
  • Waivers must be submitted no later than May 19 and can be emailed to jkfoti@gmail.com.
  • All athletes/teams are responsible for making sure the above waivers and captains boating license # or credentials are submitted by Wednesday May 19, 2021 in order for your entry to be accepted.
  • Escorts must have a working VHF radio to be permitted into the harbor.
  • IT IS MANDATORY that all escort boats check in with lead official on channel 72 before the start of the race. Any paddler whose boat has not been checked in cannot race and will not be considered as part of the event or the responsibility of the event organizers.
  • Escort boats must assist any paddler or boat in distress.
  • Primary channel is 72 after the race start.  Escort boats must confirm connection with their paddler on VHF 72.  Back up channel is 71.
  • All escort boats must meet current United States Coast Guard Standards as defined by the USCG and must have passed the BOATER SAFETY EDUCATION SAFETY CLASS AND HAVE THEIR BOATER SAFETY EDUCATION CARD ON THEM AT ALL TIMES.
  • At the end of the race, escort boats must check out with the head official boat on vhf 72 when their paddler passes Barbers Point and begins the final 2 mile stretch to the finish.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST:
It is imperative that all crafts stay out of the Barbers Point Offshore Moorings security zone(33CFR165.1407(a)(5):
Barbers Point Offshore Moorings. All waters around the Tesoro Single Point and the Chevron Conventional Buoy Moorings beginning at 21°16.43′ N/158°06.03′ W, thence northeast to 21°17.35′ N/158°3.95′ W, thence southeast to 21°16.47′ N/ 158°03.5′ W, thence southwest to 21°15.53′ N/158°05.56′ W, thence north to the beginning point are off limits!

When you approach Barbers point, stay close to the island and you will be well inside of this security zone.
