PRIZE:

1st place OC-1 Tandem Relay long course for men, women, mixed, and Junior boys and girls earns free entry for the team to race in the 2024 Molokai Challenge OC-1 tandem relay on May 19.

AND

The combined winner from both the Coastal Relay and the Molokai Challenge Tandem Relay for men, women and mixed will win a bonus of $500.00, in addition to the prize money that will be offered (amount TBA) for the Molokai Challenge. 

Categories and Age Groups

  • OC-1, V-1, Surfski-1, SUP and Prone. Age division is based on the youngest member of team:
  • 2 paddler team
    • Male: Junior (16 and 18, and under), 19-39, 40-57, 58-65, 66 and older.  Top 3 default to open.
    • Female: Junior (18 and under), 19-39, 40-54, 55 and older.  Top 3 default to open.
    • Mixed: Open
  • 4 paddler team. OC-1, V-1, Surfski-1 only
    • Open division only – Male, Female or mixed. No age groups.
  • OC-2 and Surfski-2.  4 paddler teams
    • 18 and under, 19-49, 50+ for male and female
    • Mixed – open only
  • Categories for OC-6, OC-3
    • Male, female and mixed: No age groups.  Open division only

Course breakdown

  • Long Course. 4 legs from Kailua to Waikiki:
    • OC-1, V-1, Surfski: 2 paddler Tandem relay division with age categories / 4 paddler “Open” relay division.
    • OC-2, SS-2 (4 person relay division),
    • OC-6 (12 persons),
    • OC-3 (6 persons).
  • Short Course:
    • OC-1, V-1, Surfski-1, SUP (open board class), Prone (open board class). 2 paddlers
    • OC-2 and SS-2.  4 paddlers
    • OC-6 (12 persons)
    • OC-3 (6 persons).

RACE DAY CHECK IN AT KAILUA BEACH PARK – KAILUA HALAU ACROSS FROM BUZZ’S

  • 7:00-8:00 a.m. Registration at Kailua Beach Park.
  • 9:00 a.m. Long Course start for all female teams, mixed, select junior boys, select men 58-65, all men 66 and older and the 4 person “open” division.
  • 9:30 a.m. Long Course start for all other teams.
  • Start times for each team may vary depending on qualification of team, at discretion of Race Director.
  • 11:00 a.m. Short Course start (Makai Pier)

Course

  • Long Course: Kailua Bay to Hawaii Yacht Club inside the Ala Wai (course is broken into four legs)
  • Short Course: Makapuu to Hawaii Yacht Club inside the Ala Wai (course is broken into two legs)

Leg 1 (Long Course):

    • The start will be on Kailua Beach fronting Flat Island and will round Flat Island (clockwise), then will go out around the Mokulua Islands to Waimanalo Beach Park for transition #1. c. 5.5 miles.

Leg 2 (Long Course):

    • From Waimanalo beach park go around Rabbit Island to Makai Pier (AROUND THE JETTY)- c. 5 miles

Leg 3 (Start of Short Course):  Makai Pier to Hawaii Kai Bath House – 9 miles

Leg 4: From Hawaii Kai Bath House to Hawaii Yacht Club (AROUND the far inside red “Nunn” buoy) 11 miles.

Note: There is reef past the Mokulua Islands for 1 mile so if you don’t know the reef, be sure to stay outside for at least a mile before you turn in towards Sherwood.  And there is a reef off Waimanalo Beach Park en route to Rabbit Island so proceed with caution.  We will discuss this during the race briefing.
