Maui Jim Coastal Relay – Sunday March 22, 2020
Part of the Maui Jim Ocean Racing Series (MAJORS)

Kailua to Magic Island
31.5 miles

• Long Course: Kailua Bay to Magic Island (New course is broken into six legs).  Legs 1, 3 and 5 are a total of 16.1 miles and legs 2, 4 and 6 are 15.4 miles.
• Short Course: Makapuu to Kaimana Beach (course is broken into two legs)

Long Course. 31.5 miles

Leg 1: The start will be at Kailua Boat Ramp, will go to a buoy 1 mile out to sea, around Flat Island (clockwise) and will return to the Boat Ramp. 2 miles.

Leg 2: From the Boat Ramp, straight out to sea for 1.4 miles to a buoy. Go right (clockwise) on the buoy to the Mokulua Islands. Go around Mokunui from the backside and go straight in to Sandbags in Lanikai.  3.75 miles.

Leg 3: From Sandbags straight across Waimanalo bay to Makai Pier, around the jetty. 5.6 miles

Leg 4: From Makai Pier to Hawaii Kai Key Hole.  9.1 miles

Leg 5: From Hawaii Kai to Kaimana beach, around the Blinker Buoy and the Windsock. 8.5 miles

Leg 6: From Kaimana beach to Magic Island, around the inside red channel marker (Nun buoy). 2.5 miles.

Short Course. 19.5 miles

Leg 4: From Makai Pier to Hawaii Kai Key Hole.  9.1 miles

Leg 5&6: From Hawaii Kai to Magic Island, around the Blinker Buoy in Hawaii Kai and around the inside red channel marker buoy (Nun buoy) outside Magic Island. 10.5 miles.

Divisions & Crafts

Age division is based on the youngest member of team:

• Long Course:
  • OC-1(or V-1) and Surfski, (2 person division)
  • OC-1(or V-1) and Surfski, (3 person division)
  • OC-2 and SS-2 (4 person relay division)
  • OC-2 and SS-2 (6 person relay division)
  • OC-6 (12 persons),
  • OC-3 (6 persons).
• Short Course:
  • OC-1(or V-1)
  • Surfski,
  • SUP (open board class),
  • Prone (open board class),
  • OC-2 and SS-2,
  • OC-6 (12 persons)
  • OC-3 (6 persons).
• Categories for OC-1/V-1, Surfski-1, SUP and Prone:
  • Male: Junior (18 and under), 19-39, 40-59, 60 and older.  Top 3 default to open.
  • Female: Junior (18 and under), 19 – 50, 51 and older.  Top 3 default to open.
  • Mixed: Open
• Categories for OC-6, OC-3, OC-2 and Surfski-2
  • Male, female and mixed: No age groups. Open division only

Pre-registration online cost per paddler: $50.00 ($45.00 per paddler for OC3 and OC-6 teams)  for adults and $25.00 for juniors at www.flpregister.com until midnight on Friday March 20.
Late (Beach) registration per paddler: $60.00 ($55.00 per paddler for OC3 and OC-6 team paddlers)
Lunch and awards immediately following at Magic Island.

INSURANCE: If you are not an annual ACA (American Canoe Association) member you have to purchase the day insurance for $5.00 and sign the smartwaiver online at:

If you are an ACA member, you don’t have to do anything more to do.

RACE DAY REGISTRATION: AT KAILUA BEACH PARK – KAILUA BOAT RAMP

• 7:00-8:30 a.m. Registration at Kailua Beach Park Boat Ramp.
• 9:30 a.m. Long Course start for Male 19-39 and 40–59
• 9:00 a.m. Long Course start for most juniors*, female, mixed and 60 + male divisions
• 10:30 a.m. Short Course start (Makai Pier)
