KIRA Race #5 – Oahu Coastal Relay

Oahu Coastal Relay – Sunday February 22, 2026
Nanakuli Beach to Pokai Bay.
Long Course: 6 legs. 26 miles.
Short Course: 4 legs. 10 miles
CANCELED:
Aloha Paddling and Ocean Recreation ʻOhana,
With regret — and more importantly, with respect — we have decided to cancel the Oʻahu Coastal Relay scheduled for this weekend, February 22nd.
March 7 was the date originally selected for the Coastal Relay to avoid any conflict with the Buffalo Big Board Classic (BBB). But when the IVF World Sprints Trials changed their date to March 6–7, we were faced with moving the race into February, thus creating an overlap with BBB, or cancelling the event.
And in our effort to bring an ocean paddling race back to O’ahu’s West Side, we lost sight of the importance of protecting the prestige of the BBB — the world’s longest-running, culturally rooted surfing event, now in its 49th year. That legacy deserves full respect.
Although canceling the Coastal Relay is difficult, respect for the patriarchs of surfing, paddling, ocean safety, and the culture and the history they possess is paramount. Buffalo Keaulana, the DeSoto brothers and the greater Mākaha ʻOhana carry the mana of the ocean and have created something that unites people from around the world.
To the West Side community who welcomed our efforts — mahalo for your understanding and support.
We encourage the paddling community to join the Mākaha ʻOhana this weekend for the Buffalo Big Board Classic and witness 49 years of history, culture, and ocean excellence.
With aloha and respect.
