Invitation Aloha, We would like to invite you and a partner(s) to join us in the largest OC1 and OC2 relay outrigger canoe race in the mainland United States and will prove to be one of the most challenging ocean events. On SUNDAY, APRIL 7TH, 2002 a group of top men and women paddlers from California, Hawaii and Canada and other various states will race one and two person outrigger canoes between Catalina Island and Dana Point in California. This event will offer the following divisions: OC1 OPEN MEN OC1 OPEN WOMEN OC1 CALIFORNIA OPEN MEN OC1 MASTER MEN (40+) OC1 SR MASTER MEN (50+) OC1 OPEN MIXED OC2 OPEN MEN OC2 OPEN WOMEN OC2 OPEN MIXED Rules
ENTRY FEE: The entry fee is 50.00 per paddler (100.00 per OC1, 150.00 per OC2). Each team will be responsible for the transportation of their equipment including, canoes, escort boat, race supplies, as well as food and lodging prior to the crossing. (Note: Unless you are an active USCKT member you will be required to pay $5.00 for USCKT event insurance). All entry forms and race fees must be mailed to CanoeSports California no later than March 23, 2002 or you will need to pay an additional 20.00 per paddler as a late registration. EQUIPMENT: Hull design is open. All canoes must have an outrigger consisting of two iakus separated by the paddler, and one ama. All hulls must weigh twenty-five pounds minimum before being rigged. Single blade paddles made from any material, any size or shape may be used. ESCORT: Every entry must have an escort boat with a minimum fifteen foot hull and forty hp. Motor, no large boats over thirty feet will be allowed within 200 feet of any canoe without clearance from the race director. You will not be able to leave the beach without escort. CHANGES: You will be allowed to make wet or dry changes. REPAIRS AND ADJUSTMENTS: The teams escort boat will be allowed to carry extra components and equipment for the canoe and it's paddlers. Any equipment carried by any escort boat may be used by any other team. Every entry must paddle the entire race using the same hull they began with. CANOE SHIPPING INFORMATION: For those of you that dont have the means to arrange to ship your canoe to Catalina we have arranged shipping. The cost is $25.00 for an OC1 and $35 for an OC2. We will not take responsibility for any damage so we suggest that all canoe's and ama's be packaged for protection. We also suggest that you hand carry your seat, rudder and iakus. The shipping stalls will be assigned first come- first serve. You will not be allowed to drop off you canoe unless you have pre-registered. All shipping arrangements will be handled through the CanoeSports Office.
Start The start of the race will be at the south end of Avalon Harbor on Catalina Island. 7:00 start: All Women OC1's and Mixed OC1
8:00 start: Men OC2's The finish of the event will be at Baby Beach inside of Dana Point Harbor and the front runners will finish at approximately 2:00pm. The awards ceremony, drinks, food, and the party will immediately follow the race at Hennesseys in Dana Point above the Harbor. The length of the course is 39.0 miles.
